Caryatid Stool

Origin: Democratic Republic of Congo
Culture: Luba (Baluba)
Period: 20th century
Materials: Wood
Height: 33 cm

Hand-carved wooden caryatid stool from the Luba people of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The circular seat is supported by a standing female figure with bent legs and raised arms, forming a compact and powerful composition.

The figure exhibits classic Luba characteristics: a serene, inward expression, almond-shaped eyes, high forehead, and carefully modeled features. The coiffure at the back of the head is decorated with raised nodular elements. The body is sculpted with rounded volumes and balanced proportions, standing firmly on a circular base. The surface shows a deep, dark patina developed through age and handling.

Among the Luba, female caryatid figures symbolize spiritual authority, memory, and royal lineage. Such stools functioned as prestige objects associated with leadership and sacred power.

Age-related wear and patina consistent with use. Visible vertical drying crack through the torso, stable and typical for carved hardwood pieces of this age.
