Janus Head

Origin: Democratic Republic of the Congo
Culture: Probably Kwese
Materials: Wood
Height: 33 cm

A compelling Janus head bust attributed to the Kwese people of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Carved from a single block of wood, the sculpture presents two opposing faces emerging from a shared head and resting on a flared conical base.

The faces are characterized by pronounced supraorbital ridges, almond-shaped eyes, a broad nose, and full, forward-projecting lips. A central crest-like coiffure crowns the head, reinforcing the vertical emphasis of the form. The dual-headed configuration is associated in Central African traditions with heightened awareness, spiritual mediation, and protective power.

The sculpture displays strong volumetric modeling and a compact, architectural presence typical of Kwese carving. The surface bears a rich, darkened patina with visible age-related erosion, contributing to its authenticity and expressive character.

Extensive age-related wear, surface abrasion, insect activity, and natural drying cracks. Structurally stable with a well-developed patina.
