Lot A19 - Power Figure (Nkisi Nkondi)

Item number: A19

Power Figure (Nkisi Nkondi)

Lower Congo region, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Wood, organic materials, metal elements
Height: 24 cm

Ritual power figure from the Lower Congo region, featuring a compact standing form with expressive facial modeling and pronounced brow ridge. The torso is densely encased with numerous tied fabric bundles and iron nails, forming a ritual charge assembly.

Such figures were empowered through the insertion of medicinal and symbolic substances, serving protective, judicial, or oath-related functions within community life. The layered surface, oxidized nails, and aged organic materials indicate prolonged ritual use.

The sculpture presents a dark, mature patina with visible wear consistent with handling and age. A strong and visually complex example of Central African ritual art.
