Lot A20 - Yaka Slit Drum

Yaka Slit Drum

Yaka people, Democratic Republic of the Congo
Wood
Height: 45 cm

Elongated figural slit drum carved in the Yaka tradition of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The instrument features a smooth, cylindrical resonator with a vertical sound aperture and is surmounted by a finely carved human head with stylized facial planes. A curved animal motif caps the finial, adding visual presence and symbolic resonance.

Used in ritual and communicative contexts, this type of drum served both sonic and symbolic functions within community life. The body demonstrates a deep reddish-brown patina developed through age and handling. The form retains aesthetic refinement and structural integrity.

A strong example of Central African ritual acoustical sculpture.
