Chokwe Chihongo mask

Angola / Democratic Republic of the Congo Border Region
Wood
Height: 22.5 cm

Carved wooden masquerade mask head in the Chokwe tradition, reflecting the expressive aesthetics of Cihongo-related performance masks of Angola and adjacent regions. The rounded crown and broad facial surface present gently modeled, half-closed eyelids and softly articulated features. The subtle incised scarification marks beneath the eyes and along the facial planes emphasize cultural identity and stylistic nuance typical of Chokwe mask carving.

The open mouth with suggested dentition reinforces the ceremonial character of the piece. Perforations around the perimeter indicate its former use as part of a full costume ensemble, with organic attachments (fiber, cloth) added for live performance.

Rich, darkened patina consistent with age and handling contributes to its visual presence, making this mask head both a compelling collector’s object and an evocative example of Central African masquerade artistry.
