Lot A24 - Luba Caryatid Stool

Item number: A24

Luba Caryatid Stool (Lupona / Kipona)

Democratic Republic of the Congo
Wood
Height: 55 cm

Carved Luba caryatid stool supported by two kneeling female figures arranged back-to-back beneath a circular seat. The elongated proportions, raised arms, and refined facial features reflect classic Luba court aesthetics.

Such stools were prestige objects associated with sacred kingship and lineage authority, symbolizing the spiritual support of female ancestors.

The surface shows a warm, aged patina with visible wear and stable age cracks consistent with use and time. A sculpturally strong and visually striking example of Central African royal art.
