Lot A27 - West African Female Figure

Item number: A27

West African Female Figure

Probably Mossi, Burkina Faso (attributed)
Height: 60 cm

Carved hardwood female figure standing in a slightly flexed posture on a circular base. The elongated neck, compact torso and calm, simplified facial features are crowned by a finely incised coiffure rendered in parallel linear carving.

The breasts and upper arms are decorated with geometric incised scarification patterns composed of chevrons, cross-hatching and triangular motifs. Such body ornamentation is associated with identity and aesthetic traditions found among Mossi groups of Burkina Faso, although related sculptural forms are also known from neighboring regions.

The surface shows substantial age wear with areas of abrasion and encrusted patina, consistent with handling and long-term use. The carving retains a strong sculptural presence and balanced proportions.

While the stylistic features suggest a Mossi attribution, this remains tentative in the absence of documented provenance.

A characterful and architecturally strong West African figure with clear decorative and ethnographic appeal.
