Seated Maternity Figure

Probably Dogon, Mali (attributed)
Height: 67 cm

Slender and vertically accentuated maternity figure depicting a seated female holding a child on her lap. The composition is characterized by an elongated torso, high cylindrical neck and finely striated coiffure falling toward the back. The calm, inward-looking facial expression and simplified anatomical treatment give the sculpture a restrained and architectural presence.

The mother figure sits on a circular stool with notched edge detailing, while the child rests upright between her arms. The proportions are notably elongated, creating a strong vertical rhythm that distinguishes this piece from more compact classical maternity types.

The surface shows consistent age wear and a warm brown patina with areas of handling and natural abrasion. Minor age cracks are visible, consistent with the material and long-term aging.

While the overall iconography and stylistic vocabulary suggest a Dogon attribution, the unusually slender proportions and construction indicate that this attribution should remain cautious in the absence of documented provenance.

A refined and elegant West African maternity figure with strong sculptural presence and decorative appeal.
