Lot A29 - Standing Female Figure
Standing Female Figure
Possibly Bambara (Bamana), Mali (attributed)
Height: 61 cm
Powerfully carved standing female figure with pronounced cylindrical torso, strong arms held close to the body and a large, flaring coiffure framing the head. The facial features are stylized and geometric, with narrow, half-closed eyes and a long straight nose. Small metal studs accent the face and torso, adding subtle decorative emphasis.
The figure displays compact proportions with muscular limbs and firmly planted feet. The coiffure, deeply striated and extending backward in a curved crest, creates a strong sculptural silhouette. The surface presents a dark, matte patina with visible age wear and handling marks.
An old break to one foot is present; the detached fragment is preserved. The break is clean and consistent with age-related wood stress.
The formal vocabulary and sculptural mass suggest a possible Bambara (Bamana) origin; however, without documented provenance, the attribution should remain cautious. The combination of strong geometry, restrained expression and powerful stance situates the figure within the broader Central Mali sculptural tradition.
A visually striking West African figure with solid presence and collector appeal.
