Zoomorphic Releif Panel

Uncertain Origin – Possibly West Africa or Southeast Asia (attributed)
Height: 63 cm

Carved wooden relief depicting a stylized four-legged animal, possibly a lizard or reptilian creature, rendered in a highly abstract and compact form. The elongated body is divided by a central raised ridge, with folded limbs and a simplified rounded head emerging from the plank.

The sculpture is carved in high relief from a thick vertical board, the reverse left flat. The surface shows pronounced age wear, weathering, shrinkage cracks and a dry, natural patina consistent with long-term exposure, possibly architectural use.

Stylistically, the piece presents affinities with both West African architectural carvings (such as Dogon or Voltaic traditions) and Southeast Asian plank-based relief traditions (including Batak), yet no definitive attribution can be established without documented provenance. The cultural origin should therefore remain open.

An evocative and archaic-looking carving with strong sculptural presence and cross-cultural aesthetic appeal.
