Lot A31 - Seated Meternity Figure
Seated Meternity Figure
Possibly Dogon, Mali (attributed)
Height: 74 cm
Carved wooden maternity figure depicting a seated female holding a child. The elongated neck, projecting triangular nose, and composed facial expression reflect sculptural traditions of the western Sahel region. The helmet-like coiffure with central ridge and stylized scarification marks further reinforce this regional aesthetic.
The figure sits on a circular base with a vertical support element, holding the child securely across her lap in a classic nurturing posture. The surface shows age wear, shrinkage cracks and a deep, dark patina consistent with long-term handling and use.
While the formal features suggest a possible Dogon origin, precise attribution remains uncertain and should be regarded as stylistic rather than definitive.
A strong and visually striking Sahelian maternity sculpture with impressive scale and presence.
