Lot A32 - Caryatid Stool
Caryatid Stool
Central Africa, Luba type (attributed)
Height: 43 cm
Carved wooden stool supported by four standing female figures arranged around a central axis, each bearing the circular seat upon their heads. The composition reflects the classic caryatid stool tradition of Central Africa, often associated with Luba artistic heritage.
The figures are rendered with rounded, volumetric bodies, stylized facial features and subtle scarification marks. The thick circular seat rests firmly above, creating a compact and architecturally balanced form. The sculpture is carved from a single block of wood.
The surface shows a deep, warm patina with visible age wear and natural shrinkage cracks, including a pronounced fissure through the seat consistent with long-term drying.
While stylistically related to Luba examples, the precise cultural origin cannot be confirmed without documented provenance and should therefore be regarded as attributed.
A strong and sculptural Central African stool with expressive presence and decorative impact.
