Dan Mask - Déanglé Type

Dan people, Ivory Coast / Liberia
Height: 26.5 cm

Finely carved wooden mask of Déanglé (Dean Gle) type, originating from the Dan people of West Africa. Déanglé masks represent female forest spirits and are associated with ideals of beauty, social harmony and moral order within Dan society.

The face is elongated and gently heart-shaped, with narrow slit eyes, a refined straight nose and small, slightly open mouth. The calm and balanced expression reflects the classical Déanglé aesthetic. A textile-wrapped coiffure frames the upper part of the head, adding volume and presence.

The surface shows a deep, dark patina with signs of handling and age. Multiple perforations along the rim indicate attachment of costume elements. The interior displays consistent wear from use.

A well-proportioned and elegant Dan mask with strong sculptural presence and refined simplicity.
