Dan Mask - Déanglé Type

Dan people, Ivory Coast / Liberia
Height: 26 cm

Carved wooden mask of Déanglé (Dean Gle) type, representing a female forest spirit within Dan cultural tradition. Déanglé masks embody ideals of beauty, composure and social harmony and were performed in association with dance and community rituals.

The face is elongated and softly heart-shaped, with narrow slit eyes, a straight projecting nose and a small, slightly open mouth. The expression is restrained and introspective. Subtle planar modeling across the cheeks and brow gives the mask a sculptural, geometric character.

A textile-wrapped coiffure encircles the head and is decorated with cowrie shells, adding symbolic and visual presence. Perforations along the rim indicate attachment of costume elements.

The surface displays a deep, dark patina with visible wear consistent with age and handling. The interior shows signs of use.

A balanced and characterful Dan mask with strong graphic clarity and elegant simplicity.
