Lot A36 - Dan Mask – Déanglé Type
Dan Mask – Déanglé Type (with Full Fiber Costume)
Dan people, Ivory Coast / Liberia
Mask height (wooden face): 34 cm
Total height including fiber: approx. 56 cm
Carved wooden mask of Déanglé (Dean Gle) type, representing a female spirit associated with beauty, dignity and social harmony in Dan ceremonial tradition. Déanglé masks embody refined femininity and moral authority and were performed with elaborate fiber costumes.
The elongated face displays narrow slit eyes beneath arched brows, a straight projecting nose and a small, slightly pursed mouth with a contemplative expression. The modeling is soft yet structured, with subtle relief work around the eyes and cheeks.
The coiffure is formed of braided vegetal fibers, accented with cowrie shells and rising to a small wrapped crest at the top. A substantial raffia fiber costume remains attached, framing the face and extending well below the chin, giving the mask strong vertical presence and sculptural volume.
The surface shows a dark, matte patina with visible wear consistent with ritual handling. The interior and attachment points indicate use.
A visually striking example due to its preserved full fiber adornment and balanced facial carving.
