Lot A37 - Dan Mask – Déanglé Type with Bells
Dan Mask – Déanglé Type with Bells and Fiber Costume
Dan people, Ivory Coast / Liberia
Wooden mask height: 27 cm
Total height including fiber: approx. 45 cm
Carved wooden mask of Déanglé (Dean Gle) type, representing a female spirit associated with beauty, moral order and social refinement in Dan ceremonial tradition.
The elongated face features narrow slit eyes, a straight projecting nose and a small, slightly open mouth with a contemplative, somewhat stern expression. A distinctive raised cross-shaped ridge runs diagonally across the face, creating a strong sculptural emphasis and adding expressive tension to the otherwise smooth planes.
The headdress is bordered with cowrie shells arranged along the rim, symbolizing wealth and spiritual value. Preserved raffia fiber costume elements frame the face and extend below the chin, giving the mask dynamic vertical presence. Small metal bells are attached at the sides and beneath the chin, suggesting performative use where movement would create sound.
The surface presents a deep, dark patina with visible wear consistent with handling and age. Interior perforations and attachment points indicate use within a full masquerade ensemble.
A visually powerful and characterful example, notable for its applied ridge motif, preserved fiber costume and attached bells.
