Item number: A38

Dan Mask – Deangle Type

Dan people, Ivory Coast / Liberia
Height: 26 cm

Carved wooden mask of classic oval form with smooth, domed forehead and compact proportions. The face presents circular open eye apertures with light-colored inner rims, a short, slightly projecting nose and a small, parted mouth with subtly downturned expression.

The sculptural treatment is restrained and balanced, emphasizing rounded volumes rather than sharp angular modeling. The surface bears a deep, dark brown to nearly black patina with visible handling wear and minor abrasions consistent with age and use. Perforations along the rim indicate former attachment of a fiber costume or textile surround.

The overall simplicity and calm facial structure correspond to Dan Déanglé-type masks associated with ideals of beauty, social harmony and moral authority within Dan masquerade tradition.

A compact and harmonious example with good surface presence and classic proportions.
