Lot A43 - Yaure mask
Yaure mask
Côte d’Ivoire
Wood. Height: 44 cm.
A large and architecturally composed mask with a high domed forehead and elaborate crested coiffure rising in a central ridge flanked by lateral lobes, all finely striated. The face is compact and powerfully modeled, with heavy arched brows forming a continuous curve above protruding half-closed eyelids. A long, straight nose divides the face, above a small oval mouth.
The cheeks bear geometric scarification marks in relief. The jawline is bordered by a sharply serrated contour, framing the face and enhancing its sculptural depth.
The surface shows a deep, glossy brown patina with areas of wear and handling marks. The reverse is hollowed with attachment holes along the rim.
Condition: good overall, with age-related wear, minor surface abrasions and stable shrinkage cracks consistent with use.
