Lot A47 - Dan (Gegon) bird mask
Gagon (Gegon) bird mask
Dan people, Côte d’Ivoire / Liberia
Wood, animal hide, fiber, hair.
Height (mask only, without beard): 42.5 cm.
A striking and elongated Dan bird mask with pronounced projecting beak and narrow, horizontally slit eyes set beneath heavy brow ridges. The domed forehead flows into a powerful, tapering beak form, creating a strong vertical silhouette.
The dark, almost black patina shows a smooth, worn surface with subtle reddish undertones. Along the rim are perforations for attachment of costume elements. Remnants of hide and a long, dense beard of dark animal hair remain attached, enhancing the dramatic presence of the piece.
The interior retains original fastening cords.
Gagon masks represent powerful bush spirits, often interpreted as stylized hornbill or toucan forms. They are associated with strength, authority, and the enforcement of social order within Dan masquerade traditions.
Condition: age-related wear, abrasions, minor surface irregularities; beard with expected wear and thinning; structurally stable.
