Lot A48 - Marka Mask
Mask
Marka (Maraka) people, Mali
Wood.
Height: 44 cm.
A finely carved Marka mask with elongated facial structure and high domed forehead. The narrow, half-closed eyes sit beneath heavy rectangular lids, while the long, tapering nose divides the face in strong vertical symmetry. The small, protruding mouth is delicately formed, creating a refined contrast to the otherwise architectural composition.
The surface is richly decorated with incised geometric scarification patterns: cross-hatched panels on the forehead and cheeks, and linear motifs extending across the facial plane. A vertical crest rises from the top of the head, reinforcing the mask’s imposing silhouette.
The back is hollowed with a deep, oval cavity and retains perimeter attachment holes with remnants of fiber binding.
The surface shows a deep brown patina with areas of wear, handling marks, and surface variation consistent with age and use.
Condition: age-related wear, abrasions and minor surface irregularities; structurally sound.
