Lot A50 - Dogon Mask
Mask
Dogon people, Mali
Wood.
Height: 49 cm.
A tall and architectonic Dogon mask characterized by a compact rectangular head surmounted by two elongated upright ears. The frontal plane is deeply recessed and divided by a pronounced central ridge forming an elongated, stylized muzzle. Rectangular eye apertures are set within the vertical facial channel, creating a strong contrast of shadow and depth.
Flat lateral elements flank the head, while perforations along the sides indicate attachment of costume materials; remnants of fiber cords are preserved. The overall sculptural treatment is highly abstract, emphasizing verticality and mass rather than naturalistic detail.
The surface presents a matte patina ranging from warm reddish-brown to darker areas of handling wear, with visible surface variations and age-related marks consistent with use.
Condition: age-related wear, abrasions and surface irregularities; minor losses; structurally stable.
