Lot A51 - Marka Mask
Marka (Maraka) people, Mali
Wood.
Height: 57 cm.
A finely carved Marka mask of elongated, architectural form. The oval head is surmounted by three vertical crest elements — two lateral projections and a central blade-like ridge — all decorated with incised linear patterns. The long, tapering face is defined by a prominent central ridge forming the nose, flanked by dense geometric incision arranged in triangular and cross-hatched motifs across the forehead and cheeks.
Almond-shaped, horizontally lidded eyes sit beneath a band of intricate geometric carving. Flat, oval ears project from either side, pierced for attachment. The reverse is deeply hollowed, with perforations along the rim for costume fastening.
The surface shows a rich brown patina with areas of handling wear, age cracks, and minor abrasions consistent with use. The crisp incised decoration remains well preserved.
Condition: age-related wear, surface abrasions and minor shrinkage cracks; structurally sound.
