Punu (Pounou) Mask

West Africa, Gabon.

Height: 32 cm

Carved wooden Mukudj (Okuyi) maiden spirit mask with remnants of white kaolin pigment. The face shows half-closed almond-shaped eyes, a refined nose, and projecting darkened lips. The forehead is decorated with a small diamond-shaped scarification motif. Elaborate coiffure with finely incised parallel lines and a central crest.

Good patina and visible wear consistent with age.
