Kantana (Mama) Headcrest
Nigeria
Height: 37 cm

Wooden headcrest with distinctive flat, crescent-shaped horns evoking a bushcow, highlighted by a rich burnt orange patina from red ocher pigment, traditionally used by Kantana communities for its spiritual associations. A central incised ridge flanked by the horns creates a strong geometric design, while the projecting snout and open jaw suggest a hybrid human-animal identity. The horns and snout rise above a concave, hollowed dome fitted to the wearer’s head.

Such crests were associated with the Mangam masquerade, an important social institution among groups including the Kantana, Mada, Rindre, Kulere, and Ron of Sha. Mangam functioned as an exclusive social and political society, linked to healing practices, status, and village authority.

Surface wear, encrustation, and erosion consistent with age and use. 20th century.
