Lot A90 - Standing “Skeleton” Figures (pair)

Item number: A90

Standing “Skeleton” Figures (pair)

Probably Songye people, Democratic Republic of Congo

Heights: 35 cm and 25 cm

Pair of carved wooden standing figures with elongated necks, large expressive heads and distinctly accentuated rib cages. The torsos are structured with horizontal rib-like carvings, giving the figures their characteristic “skeletal” appearance. The arms are short and held close to the body; the legs are compact and set on circular bases.

The faces feature pronounced brows, narrow slit eyes (partly highlighted with light pigment) and small, stylized mouths with visible teeth. The surfaces show a deep brown patina with wear consistent with age and handling.

Based on form and carving style, the figures are probably attributable to the Songye tradition of Central Africa.
