Pair of Ere Ibeji Twin Figures

Yoruba people, Nigeria

Height: 30 cm each

Carved wooden male and female twin figures (Ere Ibeji) standing on circular bases. Both display the characteristic elongated necks, high crested coiffures with finely incised striations, and delicately carved facial scarification marks. The almond-shaped eyes, gently arched brows and composed expressions reflect the refined Yoruba aesthetic.

The male figure is depicted with emphasized genitalia; the female with pronounced breasts. Both stand with arms held close to the sides and slightly bent legs. The feet are carefully detailed with incised toes.

The surfaces show a deep brown patina with visible wear, consistent with handling and ritual care. A vertical age crack is visible to one base.

Ere Ibeji figures were commissioned by Yoruba families to honor and spiritually care for deceased twins, reflecting the important role of twins in Yoruba belief.
