Lot A92 - Pair of Yoruba Ere Ibeji Twin Figures
Pair of Yoruba Ere Ibeji Twin Figures
Yoruba people, Nigeria
Height: 34 cm each
Carved wooden male and female Ere Ibeji figures standing on circular bases. The pair displays the elegant vertical proportions typical of Yoruba carving, with elongated torsos, slender arms held close to the body, and finely detailed feet.
Both figures wear high, crested coiffures with incised linear decoration. The faces are calm and expressive, with almond-shaped eyes, defined eyelids, and gently modeled mouths. The female figure is depicted with pronounced breasts; the male with emphasized genitalia.
Each figure retains colorful beaded waist adornments with cowrie shells, reflecting the traditional practice of dressing and caring for Ibeji figures. The surfaces show a rich, dark brown patina with visible wear consistent with age and handling. Minor age cracks are visible to the bases.
In Yoruba belief, ibeji means “twin” (from ibi – born, and eji – two). Such figures are commissioned to honor and spiritually represent twins, particularly when one or both have passed away.
