Kuba Ndop Royal Portrait Figure

Kuba (Bakuba) people, Democratic Republic of the Congo

Height: 26 cm

Carved wooden royal portrait figure (Ndop) depicting a seated Kuba king (nyimi) on a square base with geometric border decoration. The figure is shown in a composed, frontal posture with crossed legs and hands resting calmly, holding an emblematic object representing the king’s ibol (personal symbol).

The head is crowned with a distinctive, flat-topped royal headdress. The face is finely carved with lowered, almond-shaped eyes, arched brows, and full, projecting lips, conveying dignity and introspection. Scarification marks and carefully modeled ears frame the elongated head. The torso is adorned with carved arm bands and a belt with patterned detail.

Ndop figures are idealized representations of Kuba rulers, created to embody the spiritual presence and kingship of a specific monarch rather than serve as literal likenesses. They functioned as commemorative and spiritual objects within the royal court.

The surface displays a rich, deep brown patina with light wear consistent with age.
