Lot A118 - Teke Power Figure (Buti / Biteki)

Item number: A118

Teke Power Figure (Buti / Biteki)

Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Height: 22 cm

Carved wooden power figure of the Teke people, standing with bent legs and a compact, forward-facing posture. The figure displays a stylized head with geometric facial features and a pronounced triangular nose. The torso and arms are wrapped with layers of aged textile, bindings, feathers, and ritual elements, forming a bundle of power substances attached to the body. The surface shows a deep, worn patina from ritual handling and age.

Figures of this type, often referred to as Buti or Biteki, functioned as protective and ritual objects. The materials attached to the body were believed to contain spiritual energy prepared by ritual specialists, intended to protect the owner, repel harmful forces, and assist with healing or personal well-being.
